Chieveley to Farnborough - 31 undulating miles

Ebike Sunday, and we rode today starting from Chieveley at the car park on the bend on School Road. Been here 3 times now, and some of today's ride was bits I have done in reverse, but with some new bits added on. So basically, I recognised nothing.😊 Much to John's amusement.  Or, some bits I did, but only once I got there.

It's been a very windy few days, but it was meant to be less today. It didn't seem like at all.

Route

We left the car park, with a bit of sun out, but also billowing clouds.

The car park is on the corner of this road on a bend

A few yard into our ride, stop to reset his Garmin.
We use this lane into Chieveley and will also return on this road, School Road

Now through Worlds End, passing under the A34 flyover, and then a nice downhill towards Hampstead Norreys.

We turn left before the village, and then right, passing over a bridge over an old railway, with views to a farm. (this looks a bit familiar) Then we pass a house where John has talked previously to a falconer. (Ahh.... we are here!) Still climbing. We turn left at a junction towards Compton (right would go to Aldworth. I should recognise this, but I don't. We soon come into Compton.

(not us in the photo!)

At 12.5 miles we come to East Ilsley, which I do recognise! Hurray! We sat here on a bench by a pond on a previous trip. We need to wiggle round a one way system, then we leave the village behind..... climbing up hill. There were a couple of cyclists ahead of us and we never did catch them up. We have ridden this next stretch to West Ilsley but in the opposite direction. I am sure its worse this way!

Its definitely an undulating road and it lasts a few miles. Very pretty, but today with a headwind it seemed like it went on forever. We did stop for a couple of photos. The light all a bit flat today, but still  pretty scenery.

and on the left at the same spot

This road called Copperage Road continues and swings lefts as it get closer to Farnborough. A pretty hamlet and we passed through here a few months ago. We had spotted a farm shop at the opposite end of the hamlet, which is one of the reasons we came this way today.

After climbing to Farnborough, we now drop down to the farm shop
at the end of the road.

CLOSED ! Oh no!! It was open last time.

We turn right, a bit more uphill..... soon to turn left and passed Brightwalton. (My power is now at 50% so getting a little worried!) Since we now need to find somewhere for our snack, we detour slightly to use the bench at the Church in Brightwalton, remembering this from  our last trip out this way. There was a man working on the roof of the cottage opposite the church.

It seemed to be getting colder, so now with jacket on and glove liners too, we set off again taking the first right turn, rather than the road straight on which is signposted to Chaddleworth. We will come to Chaddleworth later after the next loop. This section is new. A lovely downhill. Wheeeee.

heading down on loop between Brightwalton and Chaddleworth, turning
left at the bottom of this hill.

Bringing up the rear.

Left here, but only for a short section

Loved this cloud as we look up before our next turn

A  nice flat section, and as we come to this next signpost, we turn left towards Chaddleworth, which inevitably is uphill again.

John told me I would recognise Chaddleworth, which I did when we got there. (There is a little gravel path to a hidden church on our left, where we had previously detoured to visit but not today.) The road continues down and we turn left at the junction, then soon right towards Leckhampstead Thicket. Then right at a crossroads.

A big  downhill follows, with a stop at the bottom to cross the B4494 and an immediate climb as we cross up to Peasemore.

Peasemore Church on our right

In Peasemore, we go straight on today. Last  time we turned left just passed the Church

Now its downhill for a few miles, which is a relief since my power is getting a lot of use today,  and some hills still to come. Finally, we arrive back in Chieveley and retrace out route to the car park.

It's Mother's Day. Jamie is coming round for dinner. We are still in lockdown but he is in a bubble with us, so is permitted to come in the house. Last year, no visitors on Mother's Day. Who would have thought that 12 months on, we still can't see our families.
